I spend a lot of time in the car so I consume a lot of podcasts. If you didn't know there are aquarium related shows, here's a list of active (new uploads) podcasts I subscribe to
Aquarium Co-Op
- Long format. Most shows are over an hour. Many are 2+ hours. He has done 4+ hour shows in the past. Yes, I've listened to them all start to finish. Shows are uploaded every couple weeks on an irregular pace. Depends on what's going on with the business/Cory. Older shows were a bit more consistent - weekly.
- Very educational. Lots of good/qualified information. Mostly geared toward newbies because he spends quite a bit of time answering chat questions on YT Live recordings but also covers some more advanced topics whenever appropriate.
- Lots of inside baseball regarding the business - store, warehouse, best practices, etc. Also covers a lot about fish and plants. Limited to freshwater (the best water)
- Great way to hear about upcoming Co-Op projects/products, etc
- Most episodes are Cory talking solo. The cadence is great and he puts a lot of effort into ensuring a quality production.
- Some of the episodes are done by Randy and/or are carry overs from his podcast, The Aquarist Podcast. Can also be watched/listened to on YT where you can see what he holds up to the camera during recording.
- I find the inside jokes very entertaining. e.g. chihuahua lights, Fluval trippin, memberlings, cookies, etc
The Aquarist Podcast
- Long format. Usually about an hour. Usually monthly uploads.
- Randy shares interviews with various people in the industry. Really cool stuff. If you like stories and history, this is a great one.
- Great variety and quality of topics but limited to freshwater.
- Lots of episodes over a long period of time.
Tank Talk
- Long format. Most episodes are about an hour. Uploads are a bit random. Sometimes a week, sometimes a month between episodes.
- Two guys pick a topic and discuss. I do have a pet peeve that they start almost every episode saying "we didn't plan for this... its off the top of our heads with no notes...." etc. I guess another way to say it is, "informal". Not a bad thing, just my personal preferences emerging.
- They've done a few episodes on random topics, which is purely for fun. E.g. favorite movies or TV shows.
- There are several episodes covering building fish rooms, fish room emergencies/catastrophes, moving, rebuilding, etc.
- Another thing I found a bit annoying is there are many instances where they'll try to talk about something they don't have direct experience with... "I've never tried xyz but people say..." Just my personal cringe thing whenever I hear or see this.
- They each also have YT channels where you can find more content (KG Tropicals and Primetime Aquatics)
- There are several interviews with prominent guests - industry professionals, manufacturers, etc
- The info is generally good. The show's pace is good. I listen to all episodes and find myself checking for new posts.
The Aquarist's Edge
- Short format. Most episodes are 15-20min. Usually posted weekly.
- Covers various topics short and sweet. Generally really good quality info
- It's one guy basically doing a presentation. Has an accent that is easy to listen to.
- Topics are generally very beginner oriented. I'd say "education" focused.
- Great for short car rides.
Water Colors
- Long format. Most are over an hour. Some hitting 2 hours. Usually posted weekly.
- Three people from an LFS having conversations about various topics. Covers a very wide variety, including some saltwater. Lots of "Top 5..." type lists as well if you enjoy that.
- They all sound very informed. But, keep in mind the content is coming from the perspective of an LFS.
- Feels a little less formal. Much more conversational and "fun". But, they all come very prepared ahead of the show with their lists, topics researched, etc.
- You can tell these are younger folks but that's not a bad thing. It's actually encouraging. High energy. Lots of laughing and having a good time.
